How to Support Small Businesses (Without Spending Money!)

We totally get it. Sometimes, although you have good intentions, you just can’t buy gifts from  local businesses or artists and crafters. Whether it’s a tighter budget, the inconvenience of shopping from many locations/websites, or even just thinking it’s weird buying art as a gift (what if they don’t like it!?). You know what? It’s okay!

There are other ways you can support small businesses during the holidays (and year round) without spending any money! I’ll give you a few simple ideas that won’t be a burden on your wallet…

  • Follow their social media accounts and engage with their posts. Likes, shares, and comments help to get each post seen by more people.

    • Social media posts can pick up momentum and gain popularity! The more engagement a post has, the more it tends to get.

  • Tell your family and friends about an artist or small business that you like! Word of mouth is our best advertising, and even though you might not be looking to spend money, other people may appreciate the recommendations.

    • If you think someone you know might like a product photo, sale announcement, or event reminder in a post on social media, share it with them in messages or tag them in the comments!

  • Post a review about the business if you’ve purchased from them, worked with them, or have visited their store in the past.

    • Check Google, Yelp, and Facebook to see if you can write a helpful review. This can encourage others to purchase from a certain business by giving them confidence in the quality of the work, customer service, etc.

    • Check your past Etsy purchases to see if you can still leave a review for the shop.

    • Add their Etsy shop to your favorites. The more a shop is reviewed and favorited, the more likely someone will be to choose that shop over another.

  • Go to their markets, festivals, and open houses! A lot of times these events are free to attend and they’ll appreciate seeing familiar face.

    • Bonus: grab a friend (or a few) and bring them with you!

  • Check in with loved ones who own a small business. Call, send a text or an email, or drop by to see how everything is going. It’s nice to know you have the support of friends and family!
